Minimum Dimensions

Feature Minimum Recommended
Wall Thickness 0.8mm (2 perimeters) 1.2mm+ (3+ perimeters)
Minimum Detail 0.4mm (nozzle width) 0.8mm+ for reliability
Hole Diameter 1mm 2mm+ for through-holes
Text Height 3mm 5mm+ for readability
Embossed/Engraved Depth 0.4mm 0.8mm+ for visibility

Tolerances & Clearances

General Tolerance: ±0.2mm

Most dimensions will be within ±0.2mm of designed size. First layer may have slight variation.

Mating Parts: Add 0.2-0.4mm Clearance

For parts that fit together, add clearance. Tight fit: 0.1-0.2mm. Loose fit: 0.3-0.5mm.

Holes: Design 0.2mm Larger

Printed holes tend to be slightly smaller. Add 0.2mm to diameter for accurate sizing.

Overhangs & Supports

FDM printing builds layer by layer. Each layer needs something below it to print on.

✓ Self-Supporting (≤45°)

Overhangs up to 45° from vertical print without supports. Design angles accordingly.

⚠️ Needs Support (>45°)

Steeper overhangs require supports. These leave marks and add print time/cost.

💧 PVA Soluble Supports

For complex geometry with internal supports, we offer PVA supports that dissolve in water.

Common File Issues

Non-Manifold Geometry

Holes, inverted normals, or self-intersecting faces. Fix with mesh repair tools before uploading.

Zero-Thickness Walls

Surfaces with no thickness can't be printed. Extrude all surfaces to at least 0.8mm.

Wrong Scale

Check units. Common error: model designed in inches but exported as mm. We'll confirm dimensions before printing.

Tips for Better Prints

Orient for Strength

Layer lines are weakest points. Orient parts so layers align with load direction, not across it.

Add Fillets

Sharp internal corners create stress concentrations. Add fillets (rounded corners) for strength.

Design in Inserts

For threaded holes, design for heat-set inserts rather than printing threads directly.

Consider Print Orientation

Flat bottom surfaces are best. We can advise on optimal orientation for your part.
